Families of 16 people who were listed as missing from the Croatian war were notified that their loved ones had been identified after their remains were found in 2024 in a mass grave near Vukovar.
Besides family members, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Veterans Tomo Medved and Chief State Attorney Ivan Turudic attended the identification announcement at Vukovar National Memorial Hospital.
Among those identified were nine Croatian soldiers and seven civilians, including three women. The victims ranged in age from 22 to 68 and were all exhumed from a mass grave found in May 2024 at the Vukovar landfill site at Petrovacka Dola.
Fierce fighting took place in the eastern border town in 1991 when it was surrounded by the Yugoslav People’s Army, JNA, supported by local Serbian paramilitaries. The town suffered enormous destruction and mass crimes were committed after it fell.
